Body
WHEREAS, Sister Mary McNellis was born on March 6, 1910, in Kansas City, the only child to Anthony Joseph McNellis and Hanora (Hannah) McFadden McNellis, both born in Ireland; and,
 
WHEREAS, Sister Mary attended Catholic schools including Redemptorist School and graduated with a high school diploma from Loretto Academy; and,
 
WHEREAS, she entered the Sisters of Loretto in 1928 which is one of the few orders of Catholic nuns founded in this country, and was the leader of the Loretto Sisters in the late 1940s; and,
      
WHEREAS, Sister Mary earned a bachelor's degree in history from Webster University known then as Webster College, a Catholic school for women, and she earned a master's in education from The Catholic University of America; and,
 
WHEREAS, as a teacher for more than 60 years, Sister Mary enlightened and influenced students in the St. Louis and Kansas City areas in Missouri as well as students in Colorado, New Mexico, and Texas; and,
WHEREAS, Sister Mary has been described as having a rock solid faith and a gift for building relationships which has been instrumental in her devotion to and promotion of social justice, ecumenism and peace work; now therefore,
 
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature congratulates Sister Mary McNellis on reaching this significant milestone and extends sincere gratitude for her selfless contributions to education and the community.

Effective Date:  This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
