WHEREAS, on November 30, 2011, Jabir Hazziez, Jr., was a passenger on a commercial airline flight from Atlanta, Georgia, to Kansas City, Missouri; and,
WHEREAS, another passenger on the flight became disoriented because of a medical condition and attempted to open the cabin door while the plane was in the air; and,
WHEREAS, Jabir, a part-time Jackson County Sheriff's deputy and a Kansas City, Missouri firefighter, quickly jumped into action to assist with the emergency; and,
WHEREAS, when it became clear that the ill and agitated passenger would not calm down, Jabir used his law enforcement training to restrain the man; and,
WHEREAS, the airplane was diverted for an emergency landing at the Memphis International Airport with Jabir continuing to restrain the disturbed passenger; and,
WHEREAS, after medical personnel took custody of the passenger in Memphis, the plane safely resumed its flight to Kansas City with Jabir's fellow passengers extending a standing ovation to him for his heroic actions; and,
WHEREAS, Jabir's quick thinking and professional training as a deputy and a firefighter were instrumental and ensuring the safety of all the passengers and crew on the flight; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby honors Jabir Hazziez, Jr., on his heroic response during a flight emergency on November 30, 2011, and extends sincere appreciation for his actions.

Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
