Body
WHEREAS, George Erwin Owens, Sr.  was born October 21, 1925 in Kansas City, Kansas and was the only child of his parents, Ethel Pauline Bartberger and George Banker Owens, both teachers; and,
 
WHEREAS, as a child, George participated in many events, including playing trumpet in the Popeye and American Legion Boy's Band, earning the level of Eagle Scout as a member of Troop 7 of the Boy Scouts of America, and high school swim team, for which he earned two varsity letters; and,
 
WHEREAS, following graduation from Wyandotte High School in 1943, George learned to fly and then joined the United States Navy, attending Rice University for Officer Training until completion in 1946 with the rank of Lieutenant Senior Grade; and,
 
WHEREAS, during his time in Houston, George met his future wife, Lorraine Hopkins, to whom he was married for 63 years, and with whom he shared 4 children, two daughters in-law, 6 grandchildren and 1 great-granddaughter; and,
 
WHEREAS, George was an active participant in several business and land development projects throughout the country and was involved in numerous community activities including the Board of Directors for UMB Bank, the Salvation Army, the What-So-Ever House, the Blue Valley YMCA, Scout Master for Troop 66, past President and Lieutenant Governor of the Blue Valley Kiwanis Club, and many church activities at the Trinity Episcopal Church, All Saints Episcopal Church and Unity Village Chapel; and,
 
WHEREAS, George's hobbies included logging more than 4,000 hours as a pilot, swimming, tennis, darts, board games, and ping pong; now therefore,
 
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature recognizes the life and extraordinary personal and professional achievements of George Erwin Owens, Sr.
 
 
 
Enacted and Approved
Effective Date:  This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
