A RESOLUTION congratulating the St. James Catholic Church upon its 100th anniversary celebration to be held Sunday, August 27, 2006.

RESOLUTION # 16002,   August 21, 2006

 

INTRODUCED BY   Scott Burnett and Henry C. Rizzo, County Legislators

 

 

Body

WHEREAS, the St. James Catholic Church was canonically established August 26, 1906, by Bishop John Hogan with sixty households and Father John Keyes as pastor; and,

 

WHEREAS, the current church building on the corner of 39th and Harrison Streets was built in 1912 with the first Mass celebration on Christmas Eve, 1912; and,                       

 

WHEREAS, from 1906 to 1919 the parish flourished and grew to be the second largest in the Diocese of Kansas City, Missouri, with 4,000 parishioners and five Sunday masses; and,

 

WHEREAS, the St. James School, staffed by the Sisters of Mercy and located at 40th and Tracy Streets, enjoyed 70 years of success from 1907 to 1976; and,

 

WHEREAS, the St. James Parish Center was built in 1939 at 3936 Troost Avenue and now houses the Greater Kansas City Boys and Girls Club; and,

 

WHEREAS, since its inception, social justice ministry has been an integral part of the St. James mission and this mission continues today through a collaboration with St. James Catholic Church, Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Kansas City -St. Joseph, Community LINC, DeLaSalle Education Center, Holy Family Catholic Worker House, St. James Place Food Pantry and Community Kitchen, St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store, the Troost Alliance, and other neighborhood agencies; and,

 

WHEREAS, currently, Deacon P. Ross Beaudoin serves as Pastoral Administrator and Father Garry Richmeier, CPPS, serves as sacramental minister; and,

 

WHEREAS, St. James Catholic Church has 164 registered households and is known for its diversity, with parishioners hailing from twenty different countries of birth; now therefore,

 

BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature extends congratulations to the St. James Catholic Church for its 100 years of service and offers sincere appreciation for its involvement in social justice ministry throughout the community.                                                                

 

 

Enacted and Approved

Effective Date:  This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
