IN THE COUNTY LEGISLATURE OF JACKSON COUNTY, MISSOURI Title A RESOLUTION recognizing the importance of awareness and education in fighting illicit drugs and proclaiming August 1998 as COMBAT Awareness Month in Jackson County. Intro RESOLUTION # 12301, August 11, 1998 INTRODUCED BY Dennis Waits, County Legislator Body WHEREAS, COMBAT is leading a comprehensive, multidisciplinary, community-based approach to fighting illicit drugs throughout Jackson County; and, WHEREAS, some 40 prevention agencies and 20 treatment agencies throughout the County receive financial support from COMBAT and form a significant component of the effective network of law enforcement, treatment, prevention, community policing, neighborhood prosecution, drug court, corrections and family court; and, WHEREAS, the legislatively appointed Special Advisory Committee in 1993 recommended that informing the taxpayer about the services and progress of each of these programs was imperative; and, WHEREAS, since the beginning of COMBAT, over 3,944 legal actions have been taken against drug houses; more than 700 children and adults get treatment for substance abuse each month; 357 clients have graduated from Drug Court; over 7,155 criminals have been sent to the state penitentiary, more than from any other county in Missouri; and over 635 methamphetamine labs have been closed; and, WHEREAS, COMBAT has trained over 750 landlords and property managers on how to reduce the risk of having drug activity occur on rental property; over 100 businesses received training on the precursor chemicals and lab components used to manufacture methamphetamine; and over 2,000 citizens were taught the early warning signs of a methamphetamine lab and methamphetamine user; and, WHEREAS, numerous special events will be held throughout the County to inform the citizens of substance abuse services offered through COMBAT and the progress of COMBAT programs; therefore, BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby recognizes the importance of awareness and education in fighting illicit drugs and hereby proclaims August of 1998 as COMBAT Awareness Month in Jackson County. Attorney Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
