RESOLUTION # 13097, February 14, 2000

Body

WHEREAS, each year, The Missouri Women's Council recognizes an individual or organization which has put forth a great amount of effort in the advancement of opportunities for women and their families in Missouri; and,

 

WHEREAS, Alise Martiny, President of Operative Plasterers' & Cement Masons' Local Union #518 in Independence, is the 2000 recipient of the Council's prestigious Award of Distinction; and,

 

WHEREAS, Alise has earned this distinction by assisting women wanting to enter the construction industry, as well as helping them succeed in other careers traditionally dominated by men; and,

 

WHEREAS, Alise has held strong leadership roles within organizations such as the National Association of Women in Construction, the Missouri Education and Training Council, and Project Prepare; and,

WHEREAS, not only was Alise elected as the first female and youngest person to office in the Independence Local Union, but she was the first woman to become President of the Cement Masons' and Plasterers' Local Union #518; and,

 

WHEREAS, Ron Stewart, Mayor of Independence, so aptly described Alise by stating, "She is highly respected within this community for her dedication to and experience in the labor movement, job training, and working with the underprivileged;" and,

 

WHEREAS, Kansas City Mayor Kay Barnes describes Alise by stating that she has been "...instrumental in the labor movement, job training, and working with the underprivileged.."; and,

 

WHEREAS, Alise is to be commended for her dedication and commitment to the advancement of women in non-traditional careers; now therefore,

 

BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature congratulates Alise Martiny upon receiving The Missouri Women's Council's 2000 Award of Distinction.

Effective Date:  This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
