WHEREAS, Bernie first started throwing newspapers for the Star in 1926 from his father's horse-drawn wagon; and,

WHEREAS, during his entire tenure with the Star, the only work he ever missed was when he was serving in the Navy during World War II and for a four day break for angioplasty-he even delivered papers on the day of his wedding; and,

WHEREAS, Bernie was well-known for his efficient newspaper delivery as he would  throw the papers to the customer's front porch rather than driveways or sidewalks; and,

WHEREAS, Bernie's compassion for his customers was evidenced by the fact that he would visit the homes of his customers to collect the monthly bill as he refused to send out impersonal invoices; and,

WHEREAS, he not only delivered the papers, but he also developed close relationships with those on his routes by stopping to speak with all the customers, reading them their mail if they couldn't read it, and even taking elderly women to the grocery store; and,

WHEREAS, Bernie was also a founder of the Volker Neighborhood Association, whose mission statement is "To promote, in a spirit of selfless cooperation, the health, safety and well-being of the residential and commercial fabric of Volker Neighborhood to enhance and preserve the quality of life for all."; and,

WHEREAS, Bernie was also a member of the Westport Landing Democratic Club for forty-five (45) years, actively participating on numerous campaigns for city council members, mayors, and governors; and,

WHEREAS, Bernie's legacy lives on in his son, Michael Hiller, who has followed in the footsteps of his father and grandfather by delivering newspapers; and,

WHEREAS, Bernie's caring spirit and devotion to both the Kansas City Star and the members of the community have left a mark on all who have met him; now therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature honors the life and works of Bernie Hiller for his distinguished career of over sixty (60) years with the Kansas City Star, and for his dedication and leadership in the community.
