A RESOLUTION recognizing Downtown Lee's Summit Main Street, Inc. for the advancements it has made in the redevelopment of downtown Lee's Summit.

Body
WHEREAS, in 1989 the Downtown Lee's Summit Merchant's Association was formed, which in 1990 joined forces with the Main Street Program to become Downtown Lee's Summit Main Street, Inc; and,
WHEREAS, this organization, a nonprofit preservation and restoration group, made great strides in the redevelopment of Lee's Summit's downtown area; and,
WHEREAS, beginning with 19 empty storefront buildings in a six-block area of downtown, the organization began its crusade to revitalize the area and make it a nice place to visit; and,
WHEREAS, one of the many crusaders to help with this project has been Mary Stacy, an 81-year-old woman who, after retiring from a 40-hour a week job and going to this 60-hour a week job, became actively involved in promoting cohesiveness between the business people in downtown and the community; and,
WHEREAS, the members of this organization have been instrumental in motivating merchants to renovate their businesses, resulting in a chain reaction of redevelopment and the drawing of new businesses into the downtown area; and,
WHEREAS, today there are numerous businesses, restaurants, and specialty stores which have moved into downtown, drawing people to the area; and,
WHEREAS, because of the accomplishments made by the group's members, the community is able to enjoy downtown's Friday Night Music in the Park, the Farmer's Market held on Saturday, the Bunny Hop and Halloween Parade in the spring and fall, and the holiday Christmas lights; and,
WHEREAS, the group has received national recognition for its work and was honored by the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Main Street Center for its high performance in program development, based on broad based public support, historic preservation, an active board of directors, adequate funding, a paid professional manager, and reporting of economic progress by providing statistical information; therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature congratulates the Downtown Lee's Summit Main Street, Inc., for bringing about the revitalization of downtown Lee's Summit and for its continuing efforts in making downtown Lee's Summit a fun place to visit.

Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
