Body
WHEREAS, sister city affiliations between the United States and other nations began
shortly after World War II and further developed into a national initiative from President Eisenhower's "People-to-People" program, established in 1956, to involve people from all walks of life in personal diplomacy; and,
WHEREAS, Sister Cities International, a nonprofit diplomacy network founded in 1967, now represents more than 2,100 communities in 121 countries around the world; and,
WHEREAS, the County desires to enhance global communication, promote cultural understanding, and stimulate economic development through the establishment of a sister city relationship; and,
WHEREAS, the County Executive recommends that the County become a member of Sister Cities International; and,
WHEREAS, said membership is in the best interest of the health, safety, and general welfare of the citizens of Jackson County, Missouri; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature expresses its full support of Sister Cities International and its efforts to strengthen sister city relationships and hereby authorizes the Director of Finance to issue a check to Sister Cities International in the amount of $1,420.00 for 2004 annual membership dues.

Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
