Body
WHEREAS, Alta Vista High School has received recognition by the Missouri Charter School Association as the 2013 School of the Year; and,
WHEREAS, the Missouri Charter School Association bases this honor on the school's academic performance, operation, and leadership; and,
WHEREAS, Alta Vista High School began as an alternative school for at-risk students and became a charter school sponsored by the University of Central Missouri in 1990; and,
WHEREAS, Alta Vista High School serves a diverse population of predominately Latino students with a mostly bilingual staff; and,
WHEREAS, Alta Vista students scored 35 points above the state average in the end-of-course Algebra I test in 2013, with 92 percent of its students ranked as proficient or advanced; and,
WHEREAS, since its inception, the school has grown to include a middle school and is continually developing an elementary program; and,
WHEREAS, Alta Vista administrators attribute the school's higher test scores to an extended school year, aggressive tutoring, and the teachers' approaches to student learning; and,
WHEREAS, Alta Vista is supported by its association with the Guadalupe Centers, which assists with social services needs for students and their families allowing a partnership that creates a strong foundation for students; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature congratulates the Alta Vista High School upon its recognition as the Missouri Charter Public School Association's School of the Year.
Enacted and Approved
Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
