Intro RESOLUTION # 11042, December 4, 1995 INTRODUCED BY James D. Tindall, County Legislator Body WHEREAS, the Archibald Rice Plantation, located in the City of Raytown, has an original farmhouse dating from 1844 and is one of Missouri's most outstanding examples of pre-Civil War architecture; and, WHEREAS, the Rice Home is on the National Register of Historic Places because of its role in the development of the Santa Fe, California, and Oregon Trails as a major campsite for the emigrants while purchasing provisions for their westward journey, in the 1840-50's; and, WHEREAS, it is one of the oldest remaining structures in the Raytown and Jackson County area that has a direct link to the trail era and our nation's western expansion; and, WHEREAS, it is one of the few farm homes in Jackson County which survived the Union Army's infamous Order Number 11, in 1863; and, WHEREAS, the Rice Home is in great need of preservation and restoration which exceeds the financial resources of the present owners, The Friends of the Rice-Tremonti Home Association, Inc; now therefore, BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature does respectfully request the Missouri General Assembly to adopt legislation providing for the acquisition of the Rice Home by the Missouri Department of National Resources, to be operated by the State Parks Division as a state historic site and living history museum.
