A RESOLUTION honoring Hila "Dutch" Newman on her record of dedicated civic leadership benefitting the citizens of Jackson County, Missouri.

RESOLUTION  # 15750, January 17, 2006

 

INTRODUCED BY  Dennis Waits, Dan Tarwater, Scott Burnett, Eugene Standifer Jr.,

                                                               Fred Arbanas, Bob Spence, Rhonda L. Shoemaker,

                                                               Robert A. Stringfield, and Henry C. Rizzo, County Legislators

 

 

WHEREAS, Hila Newman, affectionately known to national, state and local leaders, friends and neighbors as "Dutch," has benefitted the citizens of the County as an activist in her neighborhood and the entire community through her leadership in both non-partisan civic activities and the Democratic Party; and,

 

WHEREAS, Dutch currently serves on the Missouri State Democratic Committee's Executive Board,  as chairperson of the 10th Senatorial District Committee, and as President of the Westport Landing Democratic Club; and,

 

WHEREAS, Dutch has served as the 5th Ward Democratic Committeewoman for over thirty (30) years and has represented the State of Missouri eight (8) times as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention; and,

 

WHEREAS, Dutch was recently appointed to represent the State of Missouri as a  delegate  to the bipartisan 2005 White House Conference on Aging which is convened once each decade to make policy recommendations to the President and Congress on private and public sector initiatives to secure and promote the dignity, health, independence, and economic well-being of our nation's older citizens; and,

 

WHEREAS, Dutch is a former vice-chair of the Jackson County Democratic Committee, past president of the State of Missouri Women's Federation Democratic Club, former chair of the Missouri's Fifth Congressional District Committee, and the first woman appointed by a Governor of Missouri to serve on the Senatorial Redistricting Commission; and,

 

WHEREAS, Dutch is the past recipient of the Jackson County Democratic Committee's Harry S Truman Award and the Rodger A. Gooden Award for exemplifying a strong commitment to community social justice and inclusiveness; and,

 

WHEREAS, Dutch is the recipient of the COMBAT Community Mothers Award and the Women's Fifth District's Woman of the Year Award; and,

 

WHEREAS, Dutch's work and support for countless Democratic candidates in national, state, and local elections and work and support for non-partisan ballot issues and non-partisan candidates in city council and school board elections has greatly benefitted those candidates and issues as well as serving to better our community; and,

 

WHEREAS, even with all of these activities, Dutch still found time to marry Phillip Newman, Jr., and become a source of inspiration for her children, Michele Newman, Phyllis Rice, Donna "Donnie" Duncan and three grandchildren, Courtney Rice, Phillip Rice, and Christopher Rice; and,

 

WHEREAS, in all her endeavors, Dutch Newman has been a prime example of loyalty, honesty, integrity, and courage as a wife, mother, grandmother, and civic leader; now therefore,

 

BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature commends Hila "Dutch" Newman upon her remarkable record of achievement and successful community leadership that justifies permanent recognition; and,

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that in honor and recognition of Hila "Dutch" Newman's many years of service to the citizens of Jackson County, Missouri, the Jackson County Legislative Conference Room is hereby dedicated as the Hila "Dutch" Newman Legislative Conference Room.

 

 

Enacted and Approved

Effective Date:  This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
