IN THE COUNTY LEGISLATURE OF JACKSON COUNTY, MISSOURI Title A RESOLUTION expressing the sympathy of the Legislature to the family and friends of Margaret Louise Holliday, upon the occasion of her death. Intro RESOLUTION #11918, October 20, 1997 INTRODUCED BY Carl W. Bussey, County Legislator Body WHEREAS, Margaret Louise Holliday was born April 3, 1918, in Topeka, Kansas, the first of two daughters born to Margaret and Justine T. Garrett, who later moved the family to Lawrence, Kansas; and, WHEREAS, Margaret graduated from Lawrence Memorial High School in 1935 and earned her Bachelor's Degree in Sociology in 1939 from the University of Kansas, where she began to demonstrate her life-long committment to human development and civil rights through her participation with the YWCA and other campus organizations; and, WHEREAS, in 1939 Margaret moved to Kansas City, Missouri, to pursue a career in social work, accepting a position as a social worker with the former Jackson County Department of Welfare; and, WHEREAS, while working for the County, Margaret met and, on May 30, 1942, married attorney Harold L. Holliday, Sr; and, WHEREAS, in 1958 Margaret was the first African-American professional staffer hired by the Mid-Continent Council of Girl Scouts, where she progressed through a series of positions culminating in Director of Personnel; and, WHEREAS, in subsequent positions as Center Director for Area VI of the Human Resources Corporation (1965-69) and Executive Director of the George Washington Carver Neighborhood Center, Margaret led with her trademark style of forbearance and gentility; and, WHEREAS, with her caring touch, Margaret participated in numerous civic, social, and political activities, including the Mayor's Commission on Human Relations, the NAACP, of which she was a life member, the Governor's Comprehensive Health Committee, and board memberships of Kansas City General Hospital, Truman Medical Center, the Kansas City Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, where she was a charter member and former president, the Presbyterian Urban Ministry of Kansas City, and the City Trust of Kansas City; and, WHEREAS, Margaret was a member of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church for over 40 years; and, WHEREAS, Margaret, a devoted wife and mother, died on October 15, 1997 after a prolonged illness; and, WHEREAS, she was preceded in death by her husband and sister, Bertha; and, WHEREAS, Margaret is survived by her daughter, Dr. Bertha Garrett Holliday, Ph.D., her son, attorney Harold L. (Doc) Holliday, Jr., a member of the Legislature from 1973-1985, two grandchildren, attorneys Holli L. Holliday and Harold L. Holliday, III, her sister-in-law, Isola Richardson, her daughter-in-law, Gayle Holliday, several other relatives, and a host of friends; and, WHEREAS, in lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Margaret L. Holliday Memorial Fund at the Douglass State Bank, the proceeds of which will benefit the Harold L. Holliday Montessori School; now therefore, BE IT RESOLVED, by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature expresses its sympathy to the family and friends of Margaret Louise Holliday upon the occasion of her death...Attorney Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
