Body
WHEREAS, Jackson County Executive Mike Sanders created a Department of Emergency Preparedness and Homeland Security in January 2007 to prepare for, manage, and coordinate an appropriate response to any natural or manmade disaster; and,
 
WHEREAS, the Jackson County Emergency Preparedness and Homeland Security Department and Director Michael Curry were recognized with three awards during 2009; and,
 
WHEREAS, Michael Curry and the Eastern Jackson County Emergency Management Citizens Corps were recognized as one of four national finalists of the National Citizen Corps Achievement Awards for the "Preparing Community Organization Award," which recognizes excellence in community emergency planning, successful public-private partnerships, collaboration, and creative and innovative local problem solving efforts; and,
 
WHEREAS, Jackson County and the Independence Emergency Operations Center received the "Partners in Preparedness Award" from the International Association of Emergency Managers-USA for the "Faith-Based Preparedness Program," which is a collaborative effort between Jackson County, the Independence Emergency Operations Center and local faith organizations focused on the communication of emergency preparedness issues and education; and,
 
WHEREAS, Jackson County Emergency Preparedness and Homeland Security Department Director, Michael Curry, is a finalist for the National Emergency Manager of the Year for 2009, and was named as Governor Nixon's Co-Chair for the State of Missouri's Faith Based Initiative Roll Out and Kick Off; and,
 
WHEREAS, the Jackson County Emergency Preparedness and Homeland Security Department Director Michael Curry arranged for Chief of Intergovernmental Operations and Communications, Calvin Williford, and Public Information Officer, Jeph BurroughsScanlon, to be the first Jackson County employees to attend Federal Emergency Management Agency training in Emmitsburg, Maryland, thus enhancing the County's preparedness operations; now therefore,
 
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature congratulates the Jackson County Emergency Preparedness and Homeland Security Department and Michael Curry, Department Director, for the exemplary efforts and commendable results in providing safety and security to the citizens of Jackson County.
                  
 
 
Enacted and Approved
Effective Date:  This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
