Body
WHEREAS, Sallie Mae, a leading provider of funds for educational loans, primarily federally-guaranteed student loans, launched its Sallie Mae Cup program in August 1999, in Kansas City and two other major metropolitan areas; and,
WHEREAS, under this program, scholarship funds are awarded to the area school whose scholar-athletes achieve the highest balance of academic and athletic accomplishment; and,
WHEREAS, Sallie Mae has recently announced that the winner of its inaugural cup for the Kansas City area is Lee's Summit North High School; and,
WHEREAS, under the leadership of principal Stan Elliott and assistant principal/athletic director Cheryl Bramlette, Lee's Summit North varsity athletes achieved a 3.19 cumulative grade point average while winning conference championships in volleyball, softball, girls' basketball, boys' swimming and diving, boys' golf, girls' swimming and diving, and girls' soccer, state district championships in girls' golf, boys' soccer, volleyball, softball, girls' basketball, and girls' soccer, and the state championship in girls' soccer; and,
WHEREAS, the cup will bring with it $25,000 in scholarship funds for Lee's Summit North students; and,
WHEREAS, at a ceremony held at the school on September 27, 2000, the cup was presented by former University of Kansas and current Utah Jazz basketball star Danny Manning; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby congratulates Lee's Summit North High School upon its winning of the inaugural Sallie Mae Cup for achievement by its scholar-athletes.

Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
