Body
WHEREAS, Lisa A. Laney, daughter of James and Brenda Laney, is a senior at Raytown South High School and has earned the designation of semi-finalist in the National Merit Scholarship program which will enable her to compete for National Merit Scholarship awards; and,
WHEREAS, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, founded in 1955, conducts an annual National Merit Scholarship competition by administering the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which produces a nationwide pool of semi-finalists representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors and includes the highest scoring entrants in each state; and,
WHEREAS, Lisa earned a perfect score on the SAT I test and is a 2004 National President's Scholar Award candidate; and,
WHEREAS, in addition to her exceptional academic status, Lisa is a National Honor Society member and tutor, school academic team member, school orchestra member and successful competitor in the State & District Orchestra contests, vice president of Orchestra Council, and a Kansas City All-District Orchestra member; and,
WHEREAS, Lisa enjoys a high level of community involvement as an active youth group member in her church and enthusiastic volunteer for many community service organizations such as Special Olympics and the City Union Mission; and,
WHEREAS, Lisa plans to attend William Jewell college with a major in English Literature; therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature congratulates Lisa A. Laney as a National Merit Scholarship semi-finalist and extends sincere best wishes for continued success in her endeavors now and in the future.

Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
