IN THE COUNTY LEGISLATURE OF JACKSON COUNTY, MISSOURI Title A RESOLUTION recognizing Sylvia Dunnavant for her contributions in educating African-American women about breast cancer awareness. Intro RESOLUTION #11469, October 14, 1996 INTRODUCED BY Victor E. Callahan, Lisa Hardwick White, Fred Arbanas, John Patrick Burnett, Dennis Waits, Dan Tarwater, Dixie M. Flynn, and John C. Graham, County Legislators Body WHEREAS, Sylvia Dunnavant, a writer, photographer, and poet, has opened a new world of awareness to African-American women concerning breast cancer; and, WHEREAS, concerned after seeing alarming statistics showing breast cancer death rates among African-American women as double those of other women, Ms. Dunnavant began efforts towards educating African-American women about breast cancer; and, WHEREAS, Ms. Dunnavant authored Celebrating Life: African- American Women Speak Out on Breast Cancer, a book which features 60 African-American women from across the nation who are breast cancer survivors; and, WHEREAS, Ms. Dunnavant's highly celebrated book keys in on the dangers of breast cancer, the need for early detection and treatment, and how to be a survivor; and, WHEREAS, the Kansas City Community Coalition will feature Ms. Dunnavant in two events during Breast Cancer Awareness Month during her stay in the area of October 14-16; and, WHEREAS, Ms. Dunnavant will attend a book signing at the Bruce Watkins Cultural Heritage Center on October 15, and will be guest speaker at the Senior Adult Health Awareness Fair on October 16 at the Palestine Senior Activity Center; and, WHEREAS, Ms. Dunnavant deserves the highest of praise for her efforts in bringing awareness of breast cancer to African- American women; now therefore, BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby recognizes Sylvia Dunnavant for her efforts to educate African-American women concerning breast cancer...Attorney Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
