Body
WHEREAS, First Baptist Church of Lee's Summit will celebrate its 150th anniversary on April 14, 2010; and,
WHEREAS, First Baptist Church, formerly known as The Big Cedar Church, was organized with seven charter members on April 14, 1860; and,
WHEREAS, First Baptist Church has a demonstrated history of community involvement within the State of Missouri, the United States, and on an international level; and,
WHEREAS, First Baptist Church has made its facilities available to various organizations for both religious and non-denominational activities, holding graduations and other ceremonies, and opening its doors to other religious organizations when space within the Church has been available; and,
WHEREAS, First Baptist Church prides itself on furthering the well-being and advancement of the community of Lee's Summit and the Kansas City area by donating time, land, church equipment, and funds to groups such as the High Point Baptist Church in Raytown, Baptist Memorial Hospital in Kansas City, the White Ridge Baptist Church, and to several African American congregations; and,
WHEREAS, First Baptist Church has engaged in mission projects including volunteering at Ground Zero in New York following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, volunteering in the Gulf Coast area following Hurricane Katrina, annual youth choir trips for various ministries, and the donation of over $194,000.00 since 2007 to construct a school in a needy area of Nairobi, Kenya; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature congratulates First Baptist Church of Lee's Summit on the 150th anniversary of its founding and extends sincere best wishes for continued growth and involvement in the community.

Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
