WHEREAS, Lali Garcia, known in Kansas City and Jackson County for her role as a humanitarian, celebrates her 80th birthday on October 24, 2007; and,
WHEREAS, Lali, the oldest of four children, was born to Edward and Alicia Melendez on October 24, 1927; and,
WHEREAS, Lali's father died when she was young, and her mother remarried Ramon Reyes, Sr., who was a wonderful stepfather and a role model to Lali for his involvement with community affairs, always helping individuals in need; and,
WHEREAS, Lali married Jesse L. Garcia on April 14, 1951, and shared fifty-four wonderful years with him until his passing in March 2005; and,
WHEREAS, Lali, is recognized for her outstanding meritorious contributions of local and statewide significance to the improvement, promotion, and development of our Hispanic community; and,
WHEREAS, Lali has rendered exemplary service to the Boards of Directors of the Guadalupe Center, KC Terminal Guadalupe Center Credit Union, and Hispanic Economic Development Corporation, as well as serving as President of the Guadalupe Center, La Raza Political Club, Union Cultural Mexicana, and La Guadalupanas; and,
WHEREAS, Lali's many additional contributions include serving as volunteer for the Casa Feliz Senior Center, member of the Mayor's Breakfast Club Committee, commissioner representing the 1st Legislative District of Jackson County on the Human Relations and Citizen Complaints Commission, commissioner appointed by Mayor Emmanuel Cleaver of the Kansas City Port Authority, 1st Ward Committeewoman, and a member of the Kansas City Public Improvement Advisory Committee; and,
WHEREAS, Lali has earned many prestigious awards such as being named Humanitarian of the Year in 1990 by the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Kansas City, one of Kansas City's Power Elite by Ingram's magazine in 1993 - 94, a Squire in the Academy of Missouri Squires in 2004 by Governor Bob Holden, and she received the Dr. Purcell Award from the Guadalupe Center in 1988 and the MANA Community Service Award in 1992; and,
WHEREAS, Lali's wonderful family includes her three children, Julia, Nicholas, and Lisa, seven grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and one brand-new great-great grandchild born October 9, 2007, who will all celebrate this momentous occasion; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby joins County Executive Michael D. Sanders in congratulating Lali Garcia on her 80th birthday celebration and extends best wishes and sincere gratitude for her contributions to the Jackson County community.

Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
