Body
WHEREAS, on September 20, 1906, Helen Arita (Rita) Hattem, born to Henry Harrison and Lula Josephine Thomas in St. Louis, Missouri, will celebrate her 90th birthday with her three younger sisters, Mildred French, Harriett Kelly, and Betty Whitehead; and,
WHEREAS, Rita moved from St. Louis to Kansas City in 1918, attended Kensington Elementary School, and graduated from Central High School; and,
WHEREAS, Rita married Edward R. Hattem on August 3, 1927, and, together, they raised two sons, Edward and Roger, who have presented her with three granddaughters, two grandsons, three great-grandsons and two great-granddaughters, with another due in January; and,
WHEREAS, her professional accomplishments include training as an apprentice at Rose Moris Beauty Salon, working at the personnel department of the records center in Kansas City during World War II, managing and instructing at Moler Beauty College, owning and operating Hattem Brothers Grocery Store with her husband, and finally retiring, only to return to work again as manager of Beauty On Wheels at the Plaza Inn; and,
WHEREAS, she has been a member of the Missouri Hairdressers Association, and the National Hairdressers Association; and,
WHEREAS, Rita, a 50-year member of the Northeast Presbyterian Church, is a Ruling Elder of the church, a 38-year member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha-Rho Beta Chapter where she supports many charities including her favorite, St. Jude's Hospital, a Republican judge during elections, and a present member of the Board of Directors of the University Towers, where she now lives; and,
WHEREAS, Rita offers bits of guidance and information to young friends such as, if your date asks if you want to get in the back seat of a car, simply say "Why no, I'd rather sit up front with you," or, while eating out, if you find you lack conversation with your husband, simply recite nursery rhymes to each other, so you will laugh, and people will think you are having a great time; and,
WHEREAS, she says a successful marriage results from talking, creating your own romance, sharing, being considerate, and yet maintaining your own independence; and,
WHEREAS, she continues to enjoy life to its fullest by playing cards every weekend, eating out, going to the movies, babysitting her great-grandchildren, giving book reviews, assisting in crafts and dinners, working in the gift shop at the Towers, and, a favorite, shopping; and,
WHEREAS, Rita has the wisdom of her 90 years, the spirit of a 20- year-old, and a beauty that has enabled her to fib about her age for years; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby congratulates Rita Hattem on her 90th birthday, and wishes her many more wonderful years...Attorney
Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
