A RESOLUTION congratulating Harvey A. Jones Engineering Co., Inc., upon the occasion of its 150th anniversary and recognizing its accomplishments as a leader in civil engineering and land surveying.

Body

WHEREAS, Harvey A. Jones Engineering Co., Inc., a  family-owned Jackson County-based engineering firm, is celebrating its 150th anniversary; and,

 

WHEREAS, in 1849, Martin O. Jones moved from New York to Jackson County, and three years later founded the Martin O. Jones Company, now known as Harvey A. Jones Engineering Co., Inc; and,

 

WHEREAS, while operating the family-owned business, Martin O. Jones was appointed Jackson County Surveyor by Governor Sterling Price in 1855; and,

 

WHEREAS, in 1874, he was hired by the United States government to survey the Santa Fe Trail from Fort Leavenworth, KS, to Fort Union, NM, in order to settle a dispute over mileage rates being paid to freight haulers; and,

 

WHEREAS, following his father, Robert Hudspeth Jones took over the family business at the turn of the century; and,

WHEREAS, in 1919, Robert was appointed city engineer for the City of Independence and held this position until his retirement in 1943; and,

 

WHEREAS, the third generation businessman, Harvey A. Jones, began working for his father in 1932, and held the position of city engineer for the City of Independence from 1944-1951; and,

 

WHEREAS, he served as City Engineer for the cities of Sugar Creek, Buckner, Lee's Summit, Raytown, Grandview, and Blue Springs; and,

 

WHEREAS, in 1958, Harvey became the first chairman of the Missouri Water Pollution Board, appointed by Governor James Blair; and,

 

WHEREAS, he served as Jackson County's highway engineer for sixteen years and was credited with being the moving force behind the creation of the Little Blue Valley Sewer District and much of the existing public works infrastructure in eastern Jackson County; and,

 

WHEREAS, in 1968, Harvey was appointed chief engineer for the Little Blue Valley Sewer District; and,

 

WHEREAS, today this renowned engineering firm is headed by fourth generation business leader, Robert Hatten Jones, who has supervised the move from rods and chains, the traditional tools of surveying, to cutting-edge technology; and,

 

WHEREAS, the current management of Harvey A. Jones Engineering Co., Inc., continues to update, add to, and maintain the record of civil engineering and land surveying begun and carried on by the three generations that proceeded it; now therefore,

 

BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby congratulates Harvey A Jones Engineering Co., Inc., upon the occasion  of its 150th anniversary celebration and commends its accomplishments as a leader in civil engineering and land surveying.

Effective Date:  This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
