A RESOLUTION congratulating Coach Doug Bruce upon his retirement after 29 years of notable service to Rockhurst High School as a graduate, math instructor, varsity basketball coach, and athletic director.

Body
WHEREAS, Rockhurst High School Class of 1967 alumnus, Doug Bruce, began his career at Rockhurst High in 1978 as a math teacher and basketball coach; and,
WHEREAS, Coach Bruce earned his Bachelor's degree from St. Benedict's College in 1971 and his Master of Science in Mathematics from Northwest Missouri State University in 1973; and,
WHEREAS, prior to teaching at Rockhurst High, Coach Bruce taught and coached at Bishop LeBlond High School in St. Joseph, MO, and Bishop Ward High School in Kansas City, KS; and,
WHEREAS, Coach Bruce began the AP Calculus I and II program at Rockhurst High that has successfully propelled many Rockhurst students to elite levels and national honors; and,
WHEREAS, Coach Bruce enjoys an outstanding coaching record in basketball at Rockhurst with 244 wins and only 106 losses, winning Missouri State championships in 1987 and 1989, and receiving the 1989 Lambert Award High School Basketball Coach of the Year; and,
WHEREAS, Coach Bruce was named athletic director at Rockhurst in 1991 and was the recipient of the State of Missouri Athletic Director of the Year Award for the 1999-2000 school year; and,
WHEREAS, during his tenure as the Athletic Director, the school has won 23 state championships; and,
WHEREAS, Coach Bruce is married to Connie Gable, has two children, daughter Julie O'Connor and husband Jeremy, son Brian Bruce, and two grandchildren Lauren and Mary O'Connor; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby congratulates Coach Doug Bruce upon his retirement and extends sincere gratitude for his contributions as an academic leader and respected coach and mentor in the Jackson County community.

Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
