IN THE COUNTY LEGISLATURE OF JACKSON COUNTY, MISSOURI Title A RESOLUTION congratulating Leo Theodore Mick on the occasion of his 90th birthday. Intro RESOLUTION #11447, September 30, 1996 INTRODUCED BY Dan Tarwater, County Legislator Body WHEREAS, on August 13, 1906, Leo Theodore Mick was born the fifth child to parents Frank and Philomena (Muths) Mick in Tipton, Kansas; and, WHEREAS, Leo had seven brothers and sisters - Mary Alice (Sister Mary Philomena), Paul John, John Baptist, Catherine Theodora (Sister Mary Juliana), Christina Barbara, Marie Elizabeth, and Madelyn Dorothy; and, WHEREAS, as a small child, Leo moved with his family from Tipton, Kansas, to Sublimity, Oregon, and then later to Greeley, Kansas; and, WHEREAS, Leo has many fond memories of those early years in Oregon and recently made a trip back to the Sublimity area; and, WHEREAS, his childhood activities in Greeley included hunting for rabbits and squirrels, fishing in the area creeks, and helping on the family farm, and Leo has shared many warm and poignant stories of those early years with his children and grandchildren; and, WHEREAS, his explanation for his lack of hair was that he was "scalped by an Indian;" and, WHEREAS, on June 14, 1932, Leo married Cecelia Adelaide Rues (a girl with the most beautiful hair whom he met in childhood and who later won his heart) in a Roman Catholic marriage ceremony at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Kansas City, Missouri, and their union lasted for 48 years; and, WHEREAS, their first marital home was at 504 E. 70th Terrace in Kansas City, Missouri; and, WHEREAS, as a young man, Leo attended a Kansas City business school and later worked as a produce buyer for the Milgram Stores and others before opening his own grocery store at 55th & Troost Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri; and, WHEREAS, in 1935, his brother John joined him in the grocery business and, between the years 1935-1949, they operated a store known to all as Mick's Market; and, WHEREAS, in 1949, the streetcar line was extended from 55th & Troost to 63rd & Troost Avenue, impacting business sufficiently that the brothers pursued other opportunities; and, WHEREAS, Leo then established the Lee Biscuit Company and located it in a former ice house, also located in the 5500 block of Troost, and remained in this business until his retirement in 1971; and, WHEREAS, Leo has been a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church since 1938 and, for many of those years, was an active participant in its Holy Name Society for parish men and in its Boy Scout Troop #25; and, WHEREAS, Leo is the proud father of four children -- Donna Marie, James Leo, Patricia Ann, and Daniel Joseph; and, WHEREAS, his children have presented him with six grandchildren, Vicki Lynn, Robert John, Patricia Ann, Christine Marie, Cynthia Lynne, and James Joseph; and, WHEREAS, his grandchildren have presented him with six great grandchildren, Carla Lynn, Kyle Robert, Brandon, Alex, Christopher Stephen, and Matthew James; and, WHEREAS, Leo and Cecelia raised their family in a comfortable and impeccably maintained home at 5511 Harrison in south Kansas City; and, WHEREAS, Leo moved from this home of 54 years in 1995 to The Charter (now known as Grand Court I) Retirement Community at 501 W. 107th Street in Kansas City, Missouri, where he has made a new circle of friends and enjoys a very full social calendar; and, WHEREAS, on August 13, 1996, Leo observed his 90th birthday, the celebration of which was postponed until family could join him the weekend of September 27-30, 1996. WHEREAS, on Sunday, September 29, 1996, Leo will be surrounded by many loving family members from Arizona, California, Kansas, Maryland, Montana and Oregon, at a party held at the Grand Court I; and, WHEREAS, Leo has the wisdom of his 90 years, the spunk of a 30- year-old, and a smile that can warm an entire room; now therefore, BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby congratulates Leo Theodore Mick on the occasion of his 90th birthday celebration and wishes him many more wonderful years. Attorney Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
