RESOLUTION #16545, February 25, 2008

INTRODUCED BY James D. Tindall, County Legislator

Body

WHEREAS, on Friday, February 29, 2008, the 2008 African Centered Spelling Bee will be held in the Courtroom at the UMKC Law School; and,

WHEREAS, this program was started in 2005, when representatives from the community, UMKC, and the African Centers schools agreed to have a comprehensive discussion on the possibility of presenting a spelling bee at the university; and,

WHEREAS, the First Annual Spelling Bee Exposition was presented on February 15, 2006; and,

WHEREAS, the event has offered an opportunity for inner city African American children to be introduced to the university setting while simultaneously receiving information about the numerous educational and leadership orientated programs offered throughout the institution; and,

WHEREAS, the program works to dispel the myths associated with perceived lack of progress and underachievement of African American students; now therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby recognizes this year's "Courtroom to Classroom" themed spelling bee, and commends this program on its achievements.
