WHEREAS, Maria Jurado of Kansas City, a senior at Center High School, was recently named as a Distinguished Finalist in the ninth annual Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program; and,
WHEREAS, this program is part of a broad initiative created by Prudential Financial Companies to encourage young people to become involved in leadership activities; and,
WHEREAS, Maria is leading her school's Key Club in its "Read to Lead" project designed to make and collect Spanish-language books for Children's Mercy Hospital, thereby providing the large number of Hispanics who visit or stay there with reading materials in their native language; and,
WHEREAS, it is essential to recognize our young volunteers who selflessly contribute their time to help members of our community cope with illnesses, overcome hardships and barriers, adjust to social changes, and fulfill their potential; and,
WHEREAS, Maria has made an outstanding volunteer contribution to others and the County with no expectation of reward other than the gratification of helping others; therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature joins the County Executive, Katheryn Shields, in recognizing Maria Jurado's commitment to the value and importance of volunteering in the community and congratulates her upon her designation as a Distinguished Finalist in the ninth annual Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program.

Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
