A RESOLUTION in honor of Terri E. Barnes and Trace Warren as trailblazers for uplifting girls during Women’s History Month.

RESOLUTION NO. 21885, March 31, 2025

 

INTRODUCED BY Venessa Huskey and Donna Peyton, County Legislators

 

 

Body

 WHEREAS, every year the month of March is designated as Women’s History Month by Presidential Proclamation, to honor women’s contributions in American history and recognize trailblazing women who are doing work that lifts their communities; and,

 

WHEREAS, recognition is in order for two of our community’s champions for their work to uplift and celebrate black women and girls through The Nia Project in Jackson County and they are Terri E. Barnes and Trace Warren; and,

 

WHEREAS, Ms. Barnes and Ms. Warren have spent decades following the guidance of Dorothy I. Height who said: “We got to work to save our children and do it with full respect for the fact that if we do not, no one else is going to do it”; and, 

 

WHEREAS, Ms. Barnes is a life-long Kansas Citian, a proud graduate of Kansas City Public Schools, and Park University; and,

 

WHEREAS, Ms. Barnes has more than 30 years of leadership experience in health services and is the visionary and convener of Black Women Get Fit - an annual health and wellness experience curated specifically for Black women and their unique health challenges; and,

 

WHEREAS, Ms. Warren prior to her work with The Nia Project, was the pioneering co-founder of Trace’s Place, and is a proud veteran of the United States Army and served 11 years in Operation Desert Storm and Desert Shield; and, 

 

WHEREAS, Ms. Warren is a fierce advocate for young people and has a diverse background that includes leadership roles with the Jackson County Juvenile Courts and service as Dean of Students at the Derrick Thomas Academy; and,

 

WHEREAS, both Ms. Warren and Ms. Barnes have been instrumental in the Jackson County community for their dedication and service; now therefore, 

 

 BE IT RESOLVED that the Jackson County Legislature hereby honors Terri E. Barnes and Trace Warren as trailblazers and committed public servants.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Enacted and Approved

Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
