INTRODUCED BY Henry C. Rizzo, Theresa Garza Ruiz, Fred Arbanas, Scott Burnett,                                   James D. Tindall, Dennis Waits, Dan Tarwater, Greg Grounds and                                    Bob Spence, County Legislators

Body

WHEREAS, Labor's Educational and Political Club Independent (LEPCI) has selected Louie Wright, President of Firefighters Local 42 and 2nd District Firefighters International Vice President, as Labor's Representative of the Year for 2008; and,

WHEREAS, Louie joined the Kansas City Fire Department in 1972 after being classified as unemployable and, therefore, a candidate under the Emergency Employment Act; and,

WHEREAS, after four years with the department, Louie was elected to several key offices and was a member of Firefighters Local 42 Executive Board, showing that his classification as " 'unemployable' completely missed the mark," said LEPCI President Bill Richardson; and,

WHEREAS, in 1995, Louie was elected President, Business Manager, lead negotiator,  and chief spokesman for the Local 42, positions he still holds; and,

WHEREAS, while still a member of the Kansas City Fire Department, Louie graduated from Harvard University's prestigious Graduate School of Business Administration Trade Union Program and later took a leave of absence from the department and obtained his law degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City; and,

WHEREAS, Louie has dedicated his life to serving his loyal brothers and sisters in the Fire Department, being named Firefighter of the Year in 1982, receiving Commendations for Bravery in 1978, 1980, and 1998, and acting as the leading voice of labor in two strikes by the firefighters in the 1970s; and,

WHEREAS, Louie will be honored for this award at the LEPCI's dinner scheduled for Friday, July 18; and,

WHEREAS, Louie's children, Joanna and Nick, join in Louie's celebration of this distinguished award; now therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby recognizes Louie Wright upon his selection as Labor's Representative of the Year for 2008, and wishes him well in all his future endeavors.
