INTRODUCED BY Terry Young, County Legislator
Body
WHEREAS, Brad Dennis, a fifth grader at Daniel Young Elementary School in Blue Springs, Missouri, celebrated his 11th birthday on January 15, 2001; and,
WHEREAS, unlike most children his age, Brad preferred not to receive presents from his family and friends; and,
WHEREAS, instead of presents, he collected money for the Wayside Waifs Animal Shelter and Humane Society, a non-profit organization dedicated to finding loving homes for unwanted, lost, stolen, abandoned, neglected, and abused animals; and,
WHEREAS, Brad collected $100.00 during his birthday celebration at the China Town Café, his family's favorite restaurant; and,
WHEREAS, Debby Pickell, public relations manager for Wayside Waifs, praised Brad for his exceptional ability to understand the importance of taking care of animals, saying, "To be able to do something like this as a child is amazing;" and,
WHEREAS, Brad's mother, Angela Davidson, was not surprised when her son told her what he wanted to do for his birthday, saying, "I'm so proud of him for what he wanted to do, but I'm not shocked;" and,
WHEREAS, Brad knows a lot about dogs and plans to volunteer at Wayside Waifs when he gets older; and,
WHEREAS, his three favorite dog breeds are Rottweiler, St. Bernard and Mastiff; and,
WHEREAS, Brad obtained his dog, Molly, from Wayside Waifs six years ago, and plans to return the next time he gets a dog, which he hopes will be a Rottweiler; and,
WHEREAS, Brad, who wants to continue raising money to help less fortunate and injured dogs, says, "I want to do this every year for my birthday because those animals need it more than I do;" and,
WHEREAS, when Brad grows up, he wants to own a dog ranch or play football for the Jacksonville Jaguars; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature commends Brad "Dozer" Dennis for his unselfish act of collecting money at his 11th birthday celebration and donating it all to the Wayside Waifs Animal Shelter and Humane Society.
