A RESOLUTION congratulating Hank Stram upon his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame and declaring September 14, 2003, as "Hank Stram Day" in Jackson County.

RESOLUTION  # 14720, September 8, 2003

 

 

INTRODUCED BY  Fred Arbanas, County Legislators

 

 

Body

WHEREAS, Hank Stram, the only coach in American Football League history to take his team to two Super Bowls, was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on August 3, 2003; and,

 

WHEREAS, Hank played running back for the Purdue University Boilermakers in 1942 and 1946 through 1947, and served as an assistant coach for Purdue from 1948 to 1955; and,

 

WHEREAS, In 1959, Lamar Hunt hired Hank as the first head coach for the American Football League's  Dallas Texans; and,

 

WHEREAS, after winning the AFL championship, the Dallas Texans  moved to Kansas City  in 1963 and were renamed the Chiefs; and,

 

WHEREAS, the Texans/Chiefs won more games than any other AFL team and Hank himself won more AFL championships than any other coach; and,

 

 

WHEREAS, during his 17 seasons as a head coach, which included the Texans/Chiefs (1960 -1974) and the New Orleans Saints (1976-1977), Hank compiled an impressive record of 131-97-10 during the regular-season and 5-3 during the post-season; and,

 

 

WHEREAS, during his illustrious career, Hank devised many innovative formations such as the two-tight-end offense, the moving pocket, and the stack defense; and,

 

WHEREAS, in 1968, he was recognized as the AFL's Coach of the Year; and,

 

WHEREAS, Hank's wife Phyllis and children Henry Jr., Dale, Stu, Julia, Gary, and Marynell, share in his success; now therefore,

 

BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby congratulates Hank Stram upon his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame and declares September 14, 2003, as "Hank Stram Day" in Jackson County.

Effective Date:  This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
