Body
WHEREAS, Paseo Academy of Fine and Performing Arts, a high school in the Kansas City Public School district, placed first on March 29, 2014, in the Louder Than A Bomb youth poetry festival and competition, held at the Gem Theater in Kansas City, Missouri; and,
 
WHEREAS, the Louder Than A Bomb competition started in Chicago, IL in 2001 and is considered one of the largest youth poetry festivals; and,
 
WHEREAS, the competition, named after a Public Enemy song, is designed to bring a diverse demographic of teenagers together, who might not otherwise hear each other's stories; and,
 
WHEREAS, Paseo Academy students Unique Hughley, Alton Herron, MonCherie Mack, Tainn Holman, and Phoebe McCarty were led by their coach and creative writing teacher, Chris Odam; and,
WHEREAS, Unique Hughley was the only performer to receive a perfect score, earning the competitions' Spirit of the Slam award; and,
 
WHEREAS, this year is the first for the metropolitan area's participation in the Louder Than A Bomb competition, which involves students performing original poems before an audience and a team of expert judges; and,
 
WHEREAS, Paseo Academy beat out teams from Lincoln College Preparatory Academy, Shawnee Mission Northwest, and Shawnee Mission West high schools; and,
 
WHEREAS, the Paseo Academy team will now participate in the national competition to be held July 16 - 20, 2014, in Philadelphia; now therefore,
 
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature congratulates the Paseo Academy of Fine and Performing Arts upon its impressive finish in the Louder Than A Bomb competition.
                  
 
Enacted and Approved
Effective Date:  This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
