Body
WHEREAS, on June 8 and 9, 2007, the Union Cemetery Historical Society, in collaboration with the Kansas City Missouri Parks and Recreation Department, the Westport Historical Society, the Native Sons and Daughters of Greater Kansas City, the Jackson County Historical Society, the Shawnee Indian Mission, the Civil War Roundtables of Western Missouri, and other organizations, will commemorate the 150th anniversary of Union Cemetery in celebration of the cemetery's links of the past with the future; and,
WHEREAS, Union Cemetery was established in 1857 and is one of the oldest cemeteries in Jackson County; and,
WHEREAS, the cemetery is the final resting place for many of the region's well-know pioneers and residents including Calvin McCoy, Charles Kearney, William Chick, William Gillis, Alexander Majors, and George Caleb Bingham; and,
WHEREAS, the cemetery's monuments commemorate veterans from the American Revolution to the Vietnam War, as well as many other prominent citizens of the entire time period; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby recognizes the historical significance of Union Cemetery and encourages all Jackson County citizens to participate in the commemoration of its 150th Anniversary.
Enacted and Approved
Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
