A RESOLUTION congratulating Seneca Blount-Goodlow for winning the Jackson County Spelling Bee.

RESOLUTION # 13191, May 1, 2000

Body

WHEREAS, Seneca Blount-Goodlow, an eighth-grade boy at Northeast Middle School, became the winner of the 25th annual Jackson County Spelling Bee at Ft. Osage High School on March 18, 2000; and,

 

WHEREAS, it was the word "lepidopterist" which led Seneca to his outstanding victory over 113 other students in the fourth through eighth grades; and,

 

WHEREAS, as winner, Seneca received a Webster's Third New International Dictionary, the Samuel Louis Sugarman Award, a $100 Series EE Savings Bond from Jay Sugarman, a copy of Corel WordPerfect Office from Corel Corp., and a $50.00 DK.com gift certificate from Dorling Kindersley Publishing; and,

 

WHEREAS, Seneca will participate in the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., later this year on an all-expense paid trip sponsored by The Examiner; and,

 

WHEREAS, assisting Seneca in studying for the local Spelling Bee were his parents Mark and Darzetta, brother Robert, and teachers Gail Gorton and Tina Peal; and,

 

WHEREAS, Seneca is the first African-American ever to win the Jackson County Spelling Bee; and,

 

WHEREAS, Seneca participates on a community basketball league team called the Milestone Cyclones and is a member of the National Academic League, a group which competes with others schools in a game show-type format with questions in all academic fields; and,

 

WHEREAS, Seneca is to be highly commended for his personal achievement in striving for excellence; therefore,

 

BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature congratulates Seneca Blount-Goodlow for winning the Jackson County Spelling Bee and wishes him well as he travels to Washington, D.C., for the National Spelling Bee.

 

Enacted and Approved

Effective Date:  This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
