Intro

RESOLUTION  # 14100,   April 2, 2002

INTRODUCED BY   Bob Spence, County Legislator

Body

WHEREAS, the Lee's Summit North Broncos girls basketball team survived a furious comeback attempt by the hometown Columbia Hickman Kewpies to claim the Missouri 4A championship, with a 55-50 victory; and,

WHEREAS, Head Coach Tricia Lillygren's Broncos were 0-4 in Class 4A Final Four play before this season; and,

WHEREAS, the question has been whispered throughout the area for the past three years, "Can Tricia Lillygren really coach or does she just happen to have the most talented team in the area?;" and,

WHEREAS, the Broncos took that doubt and threw it out the bus door on its trip home after they held off Columbia Hickman for the state championship at the University of Missouri's Hearnes Center; and,

WHEREAS, "I really don't know what to say, " said Coach Lillygren, "We came down here very much the underdog and with doubt in the air about if we could come down here and perform after two years of playing subpar;" and,

WHEREAS, this is the first title for a girls 4A team from Kansas City since Lee's Summit High School's in 1990; and,

WHEREAS, the Broncos had been to the past two Final Fours, and had returned to Lee's Summit with a fourth-place trophy instead of championships; and,

WHEREAS, the Lee's Summit North Broncos girls basketball team includes head coach Tricia Lillygren, assistant coaches Sean Donovan, Aaron Bruening, Jon Gage, Tavish Whiting, and Gary Bowers, athletic trainers Steve Taylor and Joy Reed, managers Carla Schoeneman, Dani White, and Brianah Kalousek, and roster players Lia Bailey, junior-forward, Liz Pierson, senior-guard, Amy Andrews, senior-guard, Claire Coggins, junior-guard, Lauren Fruits, senior-forward, Lindsay Koerner, sophomore-guard, Kelly Herrington, senior-guard, Becky Haug, senior-forward, Paige Newsam, sophomore-forward, Alisha Sanders, junior-guard, Laura Burgess, junior-guard, Dana Ford, sophomore-guard, Natalie Soltys, junior-forward, Jessica Long, junior-forward, and C.J. Chamberlin, junior-forward, and,

WHEREAS, other team members include Nicole Peeler, Regan Russell, Cherish Mullins, Kari Fritchie, Teresa Horn, and Sydnee Mela; and,

WHEREAS, "We could not have done this without Coach," said Claire Coggins, who scored a game-high 25 points, "We wanted to win this for a lot of people but we really wanted to win it for Coach...she deserves it;" and,

WHEREAS, Coach Lillygren called perhaps the biggest timeout of her career with 2:19 remaining, after the Kewpies had scored five consecutive points and the 23-5 Broncos had seen a 10-point lead fade to a 43-38 advantage; and,

WHEREAS, Coach Lillygren drew up a successful backdoor layup play which increased the Broncos' lead to 45-38; and,

WHEREAS, with 19 seconds left the Broncos scored their final points from the free-throw line; and,

WHEREAS, as the last seconds ticked off the clock, Coach Lillygren felt like someone had lifted King Kong off her back and the celebration began; now therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature congratulates the Lee's Summit North girls basketball team upon winning the 2001-2002 Missouri 4A championship.
