IN THE COUNTY LEGISLATURE OF JACKSON COUNTY, MISSOURI Title A RESOLUTION commending Mollie Heishman, Eric Conard, and twenty-two other Oak Grove High School students for their efforts in helping the victims of a tornado in Wichita, Kansas. Intro RESOLUTION # 12807, July 12, 1999 INTRODUCED BY Terry Young, County Legislator Body WHEREAS, while watching a school broadcast about the destruction caused by a tornado in Oklahoma during the first week of May 1999, Oak Grove High School junior Mollie Heishman, age 17, decided to see if she and other students could do something to help; and, WHEREAS, Mollie obtained the support of student council president Eric Conard, and together they communicated with officials in the disaster area to see what they could do to assist the victims of the tornado; and, WHEREAS, Mollie and Eric were told that they could provide more assistance in Wichita, Kansas, which was also hit by the same storm; and, WHEREAS, they formulated a plan and initially raised $1,600 to donate to the Salvation Army to help victims replace lost items and for other necessities; and, WHEREAS, in addition, students asked for donations of items of value remaining from the annual city-wide garage sale and arranged for these items to be transported to help the Wichita victims; and, WHEREAS, on Saturday, May 8, twenty-four Oak Grove High School students traveled by bus to Wichita, Kansas, to assist in the clean-up; and, WHEREAS, the students worked diligently in a trailer park area, where some trailers were crushed together in layers, one on top of another, and others were ripped apart in the storm; and, WHEREAS, the students especially made a difference to the family who had lost a teenage son when they were able to locate one of his prized possessions, and also by assisting a business in finding money, a business credit card, and records that had been scattered; and, WHEREAS, while they were gone, a small group of students led by Mollie's sister, Amber Heishman, a 1998 graduate of Oak Grove High School, raised another $1,100 for the victims at the Oak Grove four-way stop intersection; and, WHEREAS, students who went on the trip included Mollie Heishman, Eric Conard, Robin Ruth, Matt Findley, Kerri Stowell, Melissa Crenshaw, Josh England, Cyrena Ratliff, Jerod Quinn, Josh Barrack, Amber Garner, Andrea Blasor, Chris Kolb, Jennifer Pearce, Jessica Sticken, Amie Reddell, Tia Wright, Tricia Johnson, Cindy Frazon, Jill Palmer, Brian Markworth, Joey Osborn, Jennifer Hatfield, and Tiffany Grote; and, WHEREAS, these students deserve the highest of praise for coming to the aid of the victims of this terrible disaster; therefore, BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature congratulates this outstanding group of young people for assisting the victims of the Wichita tornado, and for proudly representing their school and community in this worthwhile venture. Attorney Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
