RESOLUTION NO. 21806, November 18, 2024

 

INTRODUCED BY  Manuel Abarca IV, Jeanie Lauer, Megan L. Marshall, Jalen Anderson, Donna Peyton, Venessa Huskey, Charlie Franklin, DaRon McGee and Sean E. Smith, County Legislators

 

 

Body

 WHEREAS, the month of November is recognized nationally as Indigenous Heritage Month, an opportunity to honor and celebrate the rich histories, diverse cultures, and meaningful contributions of Native American and Indigenous communities throughout the United States, including those whose lands Jackson County now occupies; and,

 

WHEREAS Jackson County is located on the traditional homelands of Native American tribes, including the Osage, Kaw, and Missouria, and others who have stewarded these lands since time immemorial, with their descendants and cultures continuing to enrich our community; and,

 

WHEREAS, Indigenous communities have made significant contributions to the cultural, educational, environmental, and economic development of Jackson County, both historically and in contemporary society, exemplified by their enduring resilience and leadership; and,

 

WHEREAS the Jackson County Legislature recognizes the injustices, including forced displacement and systemic marginalization, experienced by Indigenous communities, and is committed to acknowledging these historical harms while promoting justice, healing, and reconciliation; and,

 

WHEREAS Indigenous Heritage Month offers an opportunity to celebrate the traditions, languages, and perspective of Native peoples, which are vital to our shared community and inspire all residents to reflect on the importance of cultural diversity and preservation; and,

 

WHEREAS the Jackson County Legislature reaffirms its support for initiatives that elevate Native voices, protect Indigenous rights, and promote cultural preservation, education, and community engagement with our local Indigenous communities; and,

 

WHEREAS, the month of November is formally recognized as Indigenous Heritage Month in Jackson County, Missouri; now therefore,  

 

BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that we honor the Native American Indigenous Peoples within and beyond our county, acknowledging their rich legacies and ongoing contributions that help shape Jackson County’s past, present, and future.

 

 

 

 

 

Enacted and Approved

Effective Date:  This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
