WHEREAS, although there has been a reduction in welfare rolls and more people have gone to work in recent years, emergency assistance agencies continue to provide a vital safety net for the poor, the aging, the disabled, and the emotionally distressed who remain in need of support; and,
WHEREAS, the cost of prescription medicines is an ongoing worry for the poor and elderly; and,
WHEREAS, the cost of food is a growing problem for senior citizens, along with maintaining a healthy diet, and more than 2 million U.S. households with elderly persons experienced food insecurity in 1999; and,
WHEREAS, the Redemptorist Social Services Center was founded in 1986 as a project of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish to serve the low income and elderly populations in midtown Kansas City through the Center's Emergency Assistance, Active Aging and Homebound, and Health Promotion and Disease Prevention programs; and,
WHEREAS, the Redemptorist Social Services Center has onsite programs with the KU and Park University schools of nursing and the UMKC dental hygiene program for low income residents of midtown Kansas City; and,
WHEREAS, the Redemptorist Social Services Center brings its front line experience to work with networks of organizations seeking long-range solutions to their clients' problems of hunger and poverty; and,
WHEREAS, the Redemptorist Social Services Center recognizes and honors the generous Kansas City community of donors and volunteers who have supported the Center for fifteen years and have made its work possible; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature declares September 7, 2001, as "Redemptorist Social Services Center Day," in observance of fifteen years of dedication to bettering the lives of the poor and aging.

Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
