WHEREAS, David Eugene Coleman, 52, of Garden City, MO passed away unexpectedly September 11, 2025, he was born November 3, 1972 in Marshall, MO to Sterling Eugene and Betty (Chevalier) Coleman; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Coleman graduated from Marshall High School and later became a distinguished leader in the world of organized labor in the construction industry over the last 25 years; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Coleman joined Iron Workers Local 10, Kansas City, Missouri in 1993 as an Apprentice, by 2001, Brother Coleman was appointed to serve as Sergeant at Arms, and then by 2004, the Executive Committee of Local 10 appointed him as a full-time Organizer; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Coleman over the next six years successfully organized several contractors and numerous iron workers, he was elected to serve on the Executive Board in 2006 and in 2009 was appointed Vice-President of Local 10, Mr. Coleman served in that role for one year before becoming the President and Business Agent in 2010, by 2015, Brother Coleman was successfully elected as the Financial Secretary-Treasurer and Business Manager; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Coleman outside of his own local, held key positions in the following union labor organizations: St Louis & Vicinity Iron Workers District Council Vice President, Missouri State Building & Construction Trades Council Secretary-Treasurer, the Greater Kansas City Building & Construction Trades President, Board Member of Union Ink, Inc. and was an Executive Board Member of the Greater Kansas City AFL-CIO; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Coleman was Chairman of the Mo-Kan Iron Workers Apprenticeship and Training, Pension, Annuity, and Health & Welfare Funds; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Coleman served as Advisory Committee Member of the Local Union and District Council Officers and Employees Pension Plan beginning in 2020, and by January of 2024, General President Dean appointed Dave as Chairman of the LU & DC Advisory Committee; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Coleman enjoyed volunteering at “Take a Kid Fishing” in Kansas City, MO, a beloved community event designed to introduce children to the joys of fishing while promoting outdoor recreation and family bonding, he also enjoyed spending time with veterans at “Fishing for Freedom” - a heartfelt and impactful event that honors veterans and active-duty military personnel by pairing them with volunteer boaters for a weekend of fishing, camaraderie, and healing; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Coleman, lived by the motto “work hard, play even harder,” known for his onery charm and magnetic personality, he was always the life of the party, his friends and family will forever cherish the countless “remember when Dave…” stories that continue to bring laughter and warmth. An avid outdoorsman, David found joy in hunting, fishing, and tending to his farm. His most treasured moments were spent under the open sky, cigar in hand, sipping fine whiskey, listening to the sounds of nature, and sharing quiet conversations with the love of his life, Tina; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Coleman was a confidant, a mentor, and a true friend to many, his absence leaves a deep void, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Coleman is survived by his beloved fiancé and soulmate of over fourteen years, Tina Marie Amelung, of their home in Garden City; his children, Gaylen Dawn Coleman and Russell Sterling Coleman, both of Kansas City; siblings Frank Coleman (Reve), Mark Coleman, and Rhonda King; and his cherished grandson, Liam, he was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Alan Coleman, and infant brother Sterling Leroy; and,
WHEREAS, David Coleman’s life was a testament to loyalty, leadership, and love. He will be deeply missed, but never forgotten; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED that the Jackson County Legislature does hereby recognize and honor David Coleman for his contribution to society.

Effective Date: This resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
