INTRODUCED BY DaRon McGee, County Legislator
Body
WHEREAS, the Monday Niters, a group of 10 "octogenarians" who are die-hard Chiefs’ fans, began in 1970, at the same time Monday Night Football aired its initial telecast on ABC national TV; and,
WHEREAS, the group is composed of mostly educators, including a public health official, a dentist, an elected official, a retired union official, a retired school superintendent, and its membership includes Dr. Charles Allen, Carl Clark, Sr., Emanuel Cleaver II, Ollie Hubbard, Dr. John Martin, Coach Jerry Price, Harry Sypert, Ed West, Big Larry, Sie Silas, Louis Palmer, Don Williams, and Jim “Grand Dad” Nunnelly; and,
WHEREAS, throughout their fifty-three years, the Monday Niters have been a major force in issue-shaping and community development, being active participants in the school desegregation era, the development and acceptance of drug treatment and crime, assisting youth in both the classroom and community, and public health activities, including COVID vaccination efforts; and,
WHEREAS, the Monday Niters' solidifying force is writing about and keeping a historical accounting of our community and the Kansas City Chiefs; and,
WHEREAS, the Monday Niters have travelled with the Chiefs for many years, being present and a part of the NFL’s Hall of Fame ceremonies, when the late Buck Buchanan and the late Len Dawson were inducted into the prestigious NFL Hall of Fame; and,
WHEREAS, the Monday Niters aim to invest in and promote promising "equity-minded" business ventures and undertakings, like the Kansas City Chiefs, that promote and include the total community; and,
WHEREAS, the Monday Niters are proud to be a history-making part and voting citizens of both Jackson County and Kansas City, Missouri; and,
WHEREAS, the Monday Niters chronicle all of their conversations and discussions in a weekly column in the Kansas City CALL newspaper; and,
WHEREAS, the Monday Niters, as octogenarians, have a community bucket-list goal to sponsor a community-wide public education program about Alzheimer's, actively participate in environmental issues, write books, increase male involvement in Kansas City family life, visit various NFL sites, learn more about city transportation concerns and their relationship to aging, and write a history book about "our" life here in Kansas City; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby honors the Monday Niters for their contributions to the community and celebrate their efforts to inform every generation about the history of professional football in Kansas City and their commitment to community development and issue-shaping.
