Body
WHEREAS, Patrick (PJ) Cullinan of Kansas City, Missouri, departed this life on July 6, 2008; and,
WHEREAS, PJ was born April 17, 1923, in Ennis, County Clare, Ireland, and came to Kansas City in 1950; and,
WHEREAS, PJ had the opportunity in Ireland to take over his father's business, but instead chose to follow to this country his girlfriend, Mollie, soon to become Mrs. Cullinan; and,
WHEREAS, PJ began work in America as a mechanic, but moved on to driving streetcars through the streets of Kansas City, continuing until the streetcar system was dismantled in 1957 when he drove the last streetcar into the stall; and,
WHEREAS, after the dismantling of the streetcar system, PJ spent the next three decades transporting Kansas Citians from place to place on city buses; and,
WHEREAS, PJ was a lover of all things Irish and a friend, mentor, and patriarch to Kansas City's Irish community, serving as a long-time member of the Kansas City St. Patricks Day Parade planning committee and volunteering at the Brookside, Westport, and Kansas City Irish Festivals; and,
WHEREAS, PJ was the Grand Marshall of the KC St. Patrick's Day Parade and Irishman of the Year in 1990, and he and Mollie were named the first Mr. and Mrs. Kansas City Irish Fest in 2007; and,
WHEREAS, PJ is survived by Mollie, his wife of fifty-six years, his sons, Michael, Kevin and wife Debbie, John and wife Kerry, and daughter Marie, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, and an abundance of close friends and relatives, both in Kansas City and Ireland; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby recognizes Patrick (PJ) Cullinan and extends its deepest sympathy to his family, friends, and colleagues upon the occasion of his death.
Enacted and Approved
Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
