WHEREAS, Jessie Nave-Carpenter was born in Belden, Mississippi on October 2, 1939, to James and Gladys Thomas-Morris; and
WHEREAS, her foster parents are Ethel and Palmer Foster of Tupelo, Mississippi; and,
WHEREAS, Mrs. Nave-Carpenter graduated cum laude from Lane College in Jackson, Tennessee, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics and Sociology, and was awarded Master of Education in Reading and Master of Education in Elementary Education degrees and an advanced certificate in Administration and Supervision by the University of Missouri at Kansas City; and,
WHEREAS, Mrs. Nave-Carpenter began her professional career teaching mathematics at Magnolia Junior High School in Memphis, Tennessee; and,
WHEREAS, she later served as a substitute teacher and held the following positions in the Kansas City, Missouri School District:
- Elementary teacher - Crispus Attucks School
- Elementary teacher - Chester A. Franklin School
- Reading Specialist - Graceland School
- Senior Instructor - Mary Harmon Weeks School
- Coordinating Instructor - Mary Harmon Weeks School
- Elementary Principal - Troost Elementary School
- Elementary Principal - Francis Willard School
and,
WHEREAS, Mrs. Nave-Carpenter has spent the last 15 years of her career serving as Principal of the Chester A. Franklin French and Spanish School; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Nave-Carpenter is a member of the First Baptist Church of Kansas City, Kansas, and has been very civic minded, serving as a life member of the NAACP, and member of Greater Kansas City, Missouri Links, Inc; and
WHEREAS, on the local level, she has been a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., holding such positions as chapter President, Vice President, Secretary, Financial Secretary, Treasurer, and
chairperson for various committees, served at the regional level as Central Regional Director representing Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri, and Oklahoma, and served at the national level as a member of the Nominating Committee and Scholarship and Standards Committee, and Chair of the Housing and Properties Committee-Delta/Habitat Project; and,
WHEREAS, Mrs. Nave-Carpenter has received the Woman Courage Award, Woman of Accomplishment Award, and Outstanding Volunteer Award from the Kansas City, Missouri Alumnae chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, the Troost School and Francis Willard School PTA Awards, and the 1993 100 Most Influential African Americans Award, among many others; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Nave-Carpenter has five stepchildren and she and her husband, the Rev. Samuel J. Carpenter, reside in the Kansas City area, serve as Pastor and First Lady of the St. James Missionary Baptist Church, and enjoy traveling together; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature congratulates Jessie Thomas Nave-Carpenter on her longstanding career in the field of education and
wishes her well in all her future endeavors.
Attorney Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of he Legislature.
