Body
WHEREAS, the Jackson County Legislature recognizes the importance of honoring individuals whose service, leadership, compassion, and commitment have made a meaningful impact on the community; and,
WHEREAS, Mike Spieler has demonstrated exceptional dedication to the people of Jackson County through his service, advocacy, civic engagement, and commitment to improving the quality of life for residents; and,
WHEREAS, the Jackson County Legislature finds it fitting and appropriate to recognize these contributions through the ceremonial dedication of Shelter Number 2 located at Longview Lake; and,
WHEREAS, Mike spent a majority of his life outdoors, particularly taking a liking to Jackson County, MO parks; and,
WHEREAS, as a championed athlete himself and graduate from Ruskin High School, Mike turned his passion for sports into coaching for a majority of his life leading baseball, flag football, and playing recreationally himself throughout his life; and,
WHEREAS, thankfully, his beloved wife and high school sweetheart, Tammy supported Mike’s passion with their children Stephen and Amanda in tow, they watched and even played on Mike’s teams; and,
WHEREAS, as a coach, he inspired hundreds of kids to use sports to cure life’s frustrations and led multiple teams to championships through the South KC YMCA youth sports programs, playing in City and County parks alike giving most of his weekends to youth athletic programs; and,
WHEREAS, on the rare occasion that Mike took a moment to himself, you could find him fishing and boating on Longview Lake or playing softball with the Kansas City Metro Softball League; and,
WHEREAS, fiercely competitive, Mike always left it all on the field and made countless friends playing recreational softball and winning many accolades as a champion in his own right; and,
WHEREAS, where Jackson County recreation programs were developed to welcome all types of people like Mike, who spent a majority of his life relishing in what Jackson County Parts + Rec has to offer while building community himself; and,
WHEREAS, this dedication will serve as a lasting tribute to the legacy, values, and community spirit exemplified by Mike Spieler; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED that the Jackson County Legislature dedicate Shelter House 2, where Mike played all his life, be dedicated in his honor as the Mike Spieler Family Shelter to memorialize his legacy, impact and use of Jackson County’s Longview lake, embodying a magnificent contribution and inspiration to all who enjoy recreation in our County and will serve as a gathering place in his honor for generations to come; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a plaque renaming Shelter House be affixed to the shelter memorizing such, and all print and online materials be denoted as such and his family be provided a ceremonial sign recognizing their personal sacrifice to such a community champion.

Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
