Body
WHEREAS, Evan Weidner, a senior at Lee's Summit North High School, was named a National Merit Scholarship finalist; and,  
 
WHEREAS, National Merit Scholarship winners are chosen from the finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies; and,
 
WHEREAS, Evan is a member of the National Honor Society, Bronco Smart, Varsity Wrestling team, and was named the Engineering Student of the Year in 2013; and,
 
WHEREAS, the National Merit Scholarship award was founded in 1955 as a privately financed, not-for-profit corporation that operates without government assistance; and,
 
WHEREAS, scholarships awarded are underwritten by nearly 500 independent sponsor organizations and institutions as well as with the corporation's own funds; and,
 
WHEREAS, nearly 1.5 million students throughout the United States entered the 2014 Merit Program as juniors by taking the preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which serves as an initial screen of program entrants; and,
 
WHEREAS, Evan's parents, Damita and Gerald Weidner, are justifiably proud of their son; now therefore,
 
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby congratulates Evan Weidner upon his recognition as a National Merit Scholarship Finalist, and extends best wishes to him in all of his future endeavors.

Effective Date:  This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
