Body

WHEREAS, Kauffman Stadium at the County's Harry S. Truman Sports Complex has been home to the Kansas City Royals Baseball Club since 1973; and,

WHEREAS, although it is in need of refurbishment and updating, Kauffman Stadium is highly-regarded by baseball fans and afficionados around the country for its setting, sight lines, and overall baseball experience; and,

WHEREAS, representatives of the County, the Jackson County Sports Complex Authority, the Royals, and the Royals co-tenants at the sports complex, the Kansas City Chiefs, are now in discussions over the appropriate funding mechanism whereby Kauffman Stadium and its sister stadium, Arrowhead, can receive the needed refurbishment and updating; and,

WHEREAS, it is expected that these discussions will lead to a vote by the County's citizens in 2006 on approval of a sales tax to fund the improvements and a corresponding commitment to long-term lease extensions by the Chiefs and Royals; and,

WHEREAS, the Legislature believes that Kauffman Stadium is the most cost-effective and best hope for the long-term success of Major League Baseball in Kansas City, and is opposed to any baseball stadium plan that would result in the eventual abandonment of Kauffman Stadium; now therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby expresses its commitment to ensuring that Major League Baseball will continue to make its home in Kansas City at Kauffman Stadium, and that the resources of County available for that purpose will be utilized only at Kauffman Stadium.
