Title

A RESOLUTION designating May 9, 2000, as Nurse Recognition Day and May 6-12, 2000, as Nurses Recognition Week in Jackson County, Missouri.

Intro

RESOLUTION  # 13194,   May 9, 2000

INTRODUCED BY Terry Young, County Legislator

Body

WHEREAS, the 2.6 million registered nurses in the United States comprise our nation's largest population of health care professionals; and,

WHEREAS, registered nurses are meeting far more diverse challenges in their profession to serve the needs of the American population in more varying health care settings; and,

WHEREAS, registered nurses are on the frontline of patient care at the bedside with our community and family members in acute care facilities, in home health care after release, in nursing home facilities caring for our parents and elders, and in rehabilitative centers and physician offices; and,

WHEREAS, the demand for registered nurses in the near future will increase because of an aging population, the continuing expansion of life-sustaining technology, the explosive growth of home health care services, and the increasing need for more qualified registered nurses to meet the future complex needs of health care consumers in our communities; and,

WHEREAS, the cost-effectiveness and the impact on the safety and quality of health care services provided by registered nurses have become ever more important components in the increasingly contentious distribution of health care funding and delivery; and,

WHEREAS, Nurses United for Improved Patient Care is committed to the empowerment of the Registered Nurse to be a voice and advocate for patients to achieve and secure the necessary balance between quality of care, patient safety, and cost-containment, and to overcome obstacles that compromise quality care and professional achievement; and,

WHEREAS, the goal of registered nurses is to continually protect the well-being of patients and the future of professional nursing; therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature, recognizing National Nurses Week, does hereby designate May 9, 2000, as Nurses Recognition Day and May 6-12, 2000, as Nurses Recognition Week, in Jackson County, Missouri, and asks its citizens to celebrate the accomplishments and diligence of registered nurses to improve our health care system and show our appreciation for the nation's registered nurses, not just for one day or one week, but at every opportunity throughout the year.
