Body
WHEREAS, Billy R. Thompson, was recently selected as Labor's Representative of the Year by the Labor's Educational & Political Club Independent for his contributions as an extraordinary labor leader; and;
WHEREAS, Billy was born in West Plains, Missouri, attended West Plains Rural School, and graduated from West Plains High School; and,
WHEREAS, in 1962, Billy joined the Teamsters Union after being hired as a warehouseman for Cloud Oak Flooring of West Plains; and,
WHEREAS, in 1965, Billy moved from West Plains to Independence, MO, where he joined the Laborers Local 663 as a warehouseman with Underground Storage, Inc; and,
WHEREAS, in 1970, Billy enthusiastically returned to the Teamsters Union as a member of Teamsters Local 838; and,
WHEREAS, Billy was recognized by Local 838's Executive Board and was appointed Door Warden in 1986 and Trustee in 1987, to which position he was reelected in 1988; and,
WHEREAS, he was appointed and reelected as Recording Secretary in 1991 and 1992, was hired as Assistant Business Representative in 1993, appointed Vice President in 1993, and elected to that position in 1995; and,
WHEREAS, in 1998, Billy was appointed President and Principal Executive Officer of Teamsters Local 838 to complete the term of John Green and was subsequently elected to that position that same year, a second term in 2001, and a third term in 2004; and,
WHEREAS, Billy has also been an active member of Teamsters Joint Council 56 where he was appointed Door Warden in 1999, Trustee of the Joint Council's Executive Board in 2000, Political Coordinator in 2002, and currently holds the position of Recording Secretary, to which he was appointed in 2002; and,
WHEREAS, Billy became President of the Teamsters Building Association in 2000 and has served as Teamsters Local 838 Representative of the Buy American events; and,
WHEREAS, Billy has been actively involved in civic organizations including Special Olympics and the United Way Working Families program and served with the 101st Engineer Battalion in the Missouri National Guard from 1963 to 1970; and,
WHEREAS, Billy married his wife, Linda, in 1967, has two children, Connie Thompson and Carol Munkirs, and two grandchildren, Jennifer and Michelle Munkirs; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature joins County Executive Michael D. Sanders in congratulating Billy R. Thompson, President of and Business Representative for Teamster Local Union No. 838 upon his selection as Labor's Representative of the Year by the Labor's Educational & Political Club Independent.
