A RESOLUTION honoring key community advocates in raising awareness and addressing the needs of victims of domestic violence, in light of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

RESOLUTION NO. 22088, October 27, 2025

 

INTRODUCED BY Sean E. Smith, DaRon McGee, Donna Peyton, Jalen Anderson,

Megan L. Smith, Manuel Abarca IV, Venessa Huskey, Charlie Franklin and Jeanie Lauer, County Legislators

 

Body

 WHEREAS, the Jackson County Prosecutor has implemented new reporting policies for law enforcement agencies and municipal prosecutors in Jackson County that involve sending more domestic violence cases to the state level, resulting in stricter punishment for perpetrators; the creation of a Domestic Violence Dashboard to provide more transparent statistics, allowing for real-time tracking of cases; and,

 

WHEREAS, local domestic violence shelters believe this improvement will be more proactive in preventing local homicides; and,

 

WHEREAS, annually, Newhouse answers more than 15,000 calls for help, provides more than 29,000 safe days and nights, serves 24,000 meals, delivers more than 15,000 hours of childcare, secures more than 150 legal orders of protection, and provides more than 1,500 hours of therapy to survivors of domestic violence; and,

 

WHEREAS, Hope House provides legal representation for over 500 cases and provides screening for thousands of individuals in potential danger through Law Enforcement programs and hotline calls annually; and,

 

WHEREAS, Rose Brooks Center screens over 12,000 calls and provides law enforcement assistance to more than 3,000 individuals each year while providing health care assistance to hundreds of individuals in need; and,

 

WHEREAS, Jackson County recognizes that there are dozens of organizations actively working for the same cause including but not limited to Shelter KC Women’s Center, Ad Hoc Group Against Crime, Momma On A Mission, Mattie Rhodes, Sheffield Place, and Restart Incorporated; now therefore,

 

BE IT RESOLVED that the Jackson County Legislature formally recognizes October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month; and,

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Jackson County Legislature honors all the hard workers at local domestic violence shelters for their dedication to improving the lives of some of the most vulnerable victims in our community.

Effective Date: This resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
