Body
WHEREAS, Jewish American Heritage Month was established in 2006 by President George W. Bush to honor the contributions and achievements of Jewish Americans; and,
WHEREAS, in 1654, a small group of Jewish refugees fled persecution abroad and sailed to modern day New York City, seeking religious freedom and helping to define the principles upon which America was built; and,
WHEREAS, since those early beginnings, Jewish American culture has been woven into the fabric of our country, through fights for religious freedom, voting rights, civil rights, and women’s rights; and,
WHEREAS, during May our community celebrates the contributions of Jewish Americans and honors their resilience in the face of a long and painful history of persecution; and,
WHEREAS, the terrorist attack of October 7th brings to the forefront the painful scars of antisemitism and genocide of Jewish people; and,
WHEREAS, the recognition of the month of May as Jewish American Heritage month serves as an opportunity to highlight and celebrate the range and depth of Jewish American Heritage; and,
WHEREAS, this is an opportunity for Americans of every faith to appreciate the contributions and achievements of the Jewish people throughout our history, including in the areas of arts, science, the military, business, and industry, and in public and community service; and,
WHEREAS, the Jackson County community is encouraged to learn more about the heritage and contributions of Jewish Americans and recommit to ridding out world of bigotry and injustice; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri that the Legislature hereby proclaims the month of May as Jewish American Heritage Month in Jackson County and calls upon our citizens to rededicate ourselves to building a world where diversity is cherished and faith is protected.

Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
