Body
WHEREAS, Makenna Lockhart, a junior at Paseo Academy of Fine and Performing Arts in the Kansas City Public School district, placed as a semi-finalist in the 31st annual English-Speaking Union (ESU) National Shakespeare Competition held May 5, 2014, at the Lincoln Center Theater in New York City; and,  
 
WHEREAS, Makenna won first place at the ESU Regional Shakespeare Competition held at the Coterie Theatre in Kansas City, Missouri on February 16, 2014; and,
 
WHEREAS, the ESU National Shakespeare Competition is a school-based program designed to help students develop their speaking and critical thinking skills as they explore the language and themes in the works of William Shakespeare; and,
 
WHEREAS, Makenna competed against over 165 other students in preliminary competitions sponsored by the Heart of America Shakespeare Festival; and
 
WHEREAS, Makenna performed a piece from Shakespeare's As You Like It and recited Sonnet 24; and,
 
WHEREAS, Makenna was coached by her sponsoring teacher, David Luby, Director of Technical Theatre at Paseo Academy; and,
 
WHEREAS, as part of her regional competition win, Makenna received an all-expense paid trip to New York City with two full days of educational and cultural activities including an exclusive acting workshop at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts; and,
 
WHEREAS, Makenna's family and friends are justifiably proud of her accomplishments; now therefore,
 
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby congratulates Makenna Lockhart upon her impressive showing at the English-Speaking Union National and Regional Shakespeare Competitions and extends best wishes to her in all of her future endeavors.

Effective Date:  This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
