IN THE COUNTY LEGISLATURE OF JACKSON COUNTY, MISSOURI Title A RESOLUTION congratulating KPRS radio station and the Carter Broadcasting Group on its 45th anniversary. Intro RESOLUTION #10916, July 31, 1995 INTRODUCED BY James D. Tindall, County Legislator Body WHEREAS, in 1950 the first black owned radio station west of the Mississippi was founded by Andrew "Skip" Carter; and, WHEREAS, KPRS made its humble beginnings with a tower made from wire stretching up the rafters of Municipal Stadium, the old home of the Kansas City Royals baseball team; and, WHEREAS, today KPRS broadcasts at 103.3 FM (known as HOT 103 JAMZ) and the AM station has been renamed KPRT-1590 (the Gospel Source); and, WHEREAS, after Andrew Carter's death in 1989, his wife, Mildred M. Carter, took over the responsibility of chairperson of the board and their grandson, Michael Carter, maintained responsibility as president and general manager; and, WHEREAS, Mildred Carter remains actively involved in the corporate planning and daily operations of the company, now known as the Carter Broadcast Group; and, WHEREAS, Michael Carter, continues as president and general manager and has seen the station ratings rise from its No. 12 position in 1987 to its current position as the No. 1 FM radio station in Kansas City; and, WHEREAS, KPRS, the oldest existing black owned radio station in the United States, is celebrating its 45th anniversary on July 28-29, 1995, with dedication of its new 16,000 square foot facility named after its founder, Andrew Carter; therefore, BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature congratulates KPRS and the Carter Broadcasting Group on its 45th anniversary, and wishes them many more successful years in the radio industry. Attorney Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
