A RESOLUTION supporting the efforts of the Liberty Memorial and National World War I Museum to make Kansas City a place of reflection and scholarship during the World War I Centennial years.

Body
WHEREAS, 2014 marks the beginning of a time when nations across the globe will observe the centennial of World War I; and,
WHEREAS, Kansas City and Jackson County have formed a Front Line Committee to continue expanding global awareness of the Liberty Memorial and the new National World War I Museum's historic collection and scholarship related to the First World War; and,
WHEREAS, leading citizens of Jackson County are seeking support in Washington, D.C., to bring international-level observances to Kansas City during upcoming WWI Centennial years; and,
WHEREAS, Kansas Citians built the Liberty Memorial in the 1920's with nickels, dimes, and dollars contributed by more than 80,000 everyday folks, including children; and,
WHEREAS, more recently, citizens restored the grand memorial to a most compelling monument dedicated to education, research, and fostering timely discussions of ethics, values, decision-making, and conflict resolution; and,
WHEREAS, the new National WWI Museum at Liberty Memorial has been designated as the nation's official WWI Museum, and has attracted more than 100,000 visitors in its first seven months of operation; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature on behalf of the citizens of Jackson County recognizes, applauds, and supports the vision and efforts of the aforementioned in making Kansas City, a focal point of reflection and scholarship during the upcoming World War Centennial years.
Enacted and Approved
Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
